Our go-to for pizza. We order from here every 1-2 weeks. Really fresh cheese and sauce. Also eats very light and doesn't feel heavy afterwards. Pizza is really best fresh out of the oven.
Note the pizza doesn't save well--the sauce loses taste when it gets cold and even more so when it's refrigerated. -

Highly-rated pizza in San Mateo? On 25th? How could I not go?
Who/What/How/Where:
===================
Just a few blocks over in my corporate apartment, I've been to a few places in/on/around 25th, but really, who knew? Velo City has one of the newer storefronts among the aged, near vintage, signs along the same street. Very cute with all things gears, wheels, and bikes (...and pizza's), they offer 2 sizes of pizzas, 7" and 16", calzones, a homemade soup, and a chopped or caesar salad.
A little pricey:
===========
7" = $6.95-$14.75
16" = $24.00-$35.00, but why did mine with 5 toppings cost $41.50?
My order (well, and the gf):
=====================
I did a custom 16" big wheel with sauteed mushrooms, pepperoni, roasted garlic, house-made sausage, and herbed ricotta [$41.50, 4.5 stars]. Chewy and crusty, loved the thin crust with a great taste. The toppings could have been more plentiful, and the pepp didn't curl -- but otherwise, this is a total winner.
The owner:
==========
I had a chance to meet Phillip, owner and pizza-maker, who is very nice! He's well educated, and gave up the corp world to pursue his dream. YES! YES! YES!
In conclusion:

Oh man I really wanted to like this place because of the good reviews but this just didn't do it for me. When we first got our pizza it looked great. We got half Ricotta, Spinach, Mushrooms and Roasted Garlic and half Artichoke, Mushrooms, Spinach, Tomatoes and Black Olives Pizza ($32 for 16").
[1] For the ricotta half I really did like the ricotta. I could taste the herbiness and how fresh it was but the rest of the slice fell short. I wish they put on more ricotta. Two dopes of it on each slice is definitely not enough. The tomato sauce, I didn't feel like there was enough spices to it. If you look at the picture you can see the red sauce but not a whole lot of spices. Maybe that's how some people like it but not working for me. I love roasted garlic but could barely taste any essences of it. The worst part of the slice was that the bottom was little more burnt than I'm use to. I do like some char to my crust but it mine was a bit too much.
[2] The artichoke half, tasted just like the other half of the pizza but instead of ricotta it had artichoke. From the picture you can tell it looks pretty much the same all around. We didn't notice it until we were more than halfway done but they forgot the black olives.
Given my experience I don't know if I would really come back. I was pretty disappointed. I do like the decor especially upstairs with the unicycle looking stools but the pizza was not to my liking. -

I was born on the east coast so my daily food groups were vegetables, fruit, bread (wow we were wrong about that one) and pizza.
I have not had pizza in a while so came to San Mateo to try this place. Parking is easy since its not in the insanity of B street on Friday night.
Overall my wife and I left wanting more. We ordered a sausage, mushroom, pepper pizza. By the way they have vegan cheese which I had (yay for no lactose!) The ingredients were very fresh. However the pizza itself was soggy, which was weird considering the reviews. The outside of the crust was burnt all around. I noticed the outer edge of the crust was much thinner than the rest, thus burnt outside and soggy inside.
Was about $45 with 2 drinks. Not my style but others may enjoy. -

Located in local neighborhood business area, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Mateo. I'm not sure what brought me here but somehow I navigated to the area to try the pizza.
There are different pizza offerings, preset combos or make your own. And if you can't decide between combo's, ask for a half and half; they'll gladly make it for you. The owner is very friendly. We ordered half and half of their combos: 1) sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, bell peppers and 2) ricotta, spinach, mushroom, garlic. The homemade mozzarella is amazing!!
I am not one for thick crust, deep dish pizza nor with the bready edge--I call it the "bone" of the pizza and Velo Pizza delivers an amazing thin, crispy crust pizza. Nice crisp edge, bottom is perfectly burnt, double baked--reminded me of pizza I enjoyed in NY. It's not NY pizza, but it really does taste good--one of the better thin crust pizza in the area.
The pizza may be a little expensive, but it's worth it to me for the homemade mozzarella, sauce and the crispy thin crust. Other places can offer a denser, thicker crust, with more pizza selections (Blue Line, Rise, St. Remo's) or something that tastes like cardboard (Costco), bargain pizza (Little Caesar's, Domino's) or make your own (Mod/Blaze)...you get what you pay for!!
Overall, a 16" (large) pizza was sufficient for 3 of us, each eating 2 slices and there were leftovers to take home. This is definitely not a fancy pizzeria, it has round metal tables and matching metal chairs--no booths or anything like that. For a non-franchise pizza place, it is very good and I would return!
